Flying

I now have a chance to fly with a PIT and lucky Mr. Vance is the one!

Since moving to Arizona, I have not gotten to see the family and friends for awhile now (yes 5 months is a LONG time for me) so we are flying back to the Midwest in 2 weeks.

I'll be honest, I have endured many activities and training issues with dogs and we have barreled through them, usually with flying colors. Airports on the other hand, are totally new for both him and I. I have only flown once and that was years ago and we all know that with 9/11 rules, procedures, etc..have changed drastically.

We are flying not with a major airline, but a smaller one that only goes to certain airports and certain times to make your trip cheap. Allegiant Air is the company and I was all for saving money, but was skeptical about a PIT with me. I called them and they say as long as his cape is on and we have some sort of identification then we are good to go. Now I know that them saying one thing and doing another is totally different so we shall see.

Adam and I are both flying so that will give Vance a bit more room to sprawl out in front of us.
I will have some treats in my pocket to help with liftoff and landing.

To be honest, the only thing I'm worried about is his bladder. He seems to have a small one :) and in a strange place where I have no idea where the exits are could be a problem. I will be doing alot of sits along the way out so he knows that right after we get off the plane, he can't go right then. I so hope the doors are close and we don't have to walk far. Hey! He isn't too heavy to carry! lol!

If any of you have flown with a PIT or a working dog, any tips would be appreciated. I'm sure that once I do the trip to Iowa, the return flight will be smoother and I will know the procedure.

If you're worried about him not holding it, don't let him drink that morning. A couple ice chips on the plane will help keep him hydrated and help if his ears are bothered.

I usually take a bone along for my dogs to have something to chew on, too.

As for security, have him sit-stay, make a long leash, you walk through the metal detector (I always go sideways so not to bump the detector and set it off), then call him though to you. The zipper or anything metal on his cape and collar might make the detector alarm. If it does, they just need to pat him down.

Wear shoes that are easy to put on and take off.

Flying really isn't a big deal, so if you stay calm, Vance will, too. I think that's most of the tips I have.

Have fun!

Sorry, I have no experience in this area so no helpful advice...but what a great opportunity! I'm sure he'll do just fine.
