Capes are for Assistance Dogs, Not Pets

The parade went well, despite the fact that it felt like 100 degrees or more. Cobra was extremely hot, so I went to my friends grandma's house were he could get cool in the air conditioning.
When we were walking in the parade, some lady shouted out that she wanted to know where I got Cobra's cape. I briefly told her that I was raising an assistance dog and that the cape comes with the dog, you can't buy one. After I told her that, I heard her tell the people by her that she needs to get one for her dog. That's the first time I heard something like that before. I never really believed that there were people out there who wanted to cause problems for everyone else, but I shudder to think what will happen if she manages to find a cape somewhere on Ebay or something and uses it on her dog. I guess the only thing we can do is educate people about these dogs and why we don't use our pet dogs for this (I can just imagine Annie pulling someone down the street to catch a ball a nearby child threw)

I heard something similar once while in one of the theme parks. This woman saw Rufus's harness, and said "we need to get one of those for our dog!" I gave her a dirty look, so she switched into Spanish, which I could understand, and she finally shut up after another dirty look. I didn't care that she was cussing me out in Spanish, but I didn't want her taking her pet dog anywhere and passing it off as a SD. We were only passing by, so there wasn't time to stop and discuss with her why hers was a bad idea.

Now I understand why the Seeing Eye puts serial numbers on their harnesses, after someone sold one on Ebay. They now keep track of who has (or is supposed to have) each harness they issue.

That's also why KS is an ask first state. People started either making capes or getting capes from somewhere and abusing the rights of (in this case) puppies in training. So, they pulled the rights to where we have to ask first. It's a sad, sad reminder of how little people understand about the importance of these dogs.

FL is an ask first state too, probably for the same reasons.

I HATE when people say that. Most of the time I laugh hysterically like they just told me the funniest joke. It bothers me how people think it is okay to make a puppy jacket just so that their mis-behaving dog can go places with them. I have seen it a few times and every time I think the people need a good swift kick in the tush!! Because they really ruin it for the dogs that deserve access.
